Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake has dropped a first trailer, giving the first 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic novel another fresh makeover.
It’s also Villeneuve’s next major film following the success of 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, another soft remake of an 80s classic which was critically acclaimed and featured a prominent cast. This time, Villneuve’s experience takes viewers back into Arrakis, a desolate dessert-like world harboring one of the universe’s most powerful spices. The 2020 remake stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the member of a powerful House Atreides who experiences visions of a large battle involving rival houses. He struggles to face the responsibility of ruling his territory, as he begins falling in love with a mysterious Channi, played by Zendaya.
Paul also overcomes his own fears as he ventures into the unknown landscape and uses his training to survive against space raiders and warring factions looking to eliminate members of his family. This is where viewers get to see Chalamet’s role and character development as he finds the answers to his haunting visions.
The trailer also featured Oscar Isaav starring as Duke Leto Atreides, who touches down on Arrakis with an iron fist and a mission to find the life-extending spice. Josh Brolin’s character Gurney Halleck was shown sparring with Paul, giving viewers a taste of Dune‘s action and choreography similar to 2049. Much of the fights are also coming from Aquaman Jason Momoa, playing swordmaster Duncan Idaho who protects House Atreides from outside threats. But unknown to House Atreides, Dune is also inhabited by massive sandworms swallowing anyone in their path. Unlike the first 1984 movie, Villeneuve’s sandworms are even bigger than before, posing a threat to all factions roaming the empty desert.
Dune is currently set for a December 18, 2020 release date with a possibility for delaying it amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
