Almost 25 years since the first The Mask film, creator Mike Richardson has expressed an interest in bringing it back to the big screen.
In an interview with Forbes, Richardson discussed how he’d like to see “a really good physical comedian [in the role]”, and specified that he had a specific lady in mind, though he noted that she would take some convincing.
First published in the ’80s The Mask is a comic book about a magical mask that bestows on its wearer reality-bending powers and an altered appearance, characterized by a large set of teeth and a green head. Said mask affects the personality of the wearer by removing all social and moral inhibitions, causing the wearer to become insane and behave like a slapstick cartoon character vaguely guided by their intentions.
Dark Horse will soon be publishing a brand-new Mask comic that Mike promises will adhere closer to the dark nature of the first series written by John Arcudi and drawn by Doug Mahnke in the early 1990s.
“It’s a great character, you’ll be seeing him again and we’ve got a version that sticks closer to the original comic version coming up from a well-known show producer and writer,” he declared.
While nothing concrete has been laid down yet, it looks like a Mask revival is in the cards. We’ll wait and see what comes of it in the near future.
