James Gunn in Talks to Write Suicide Squad Sequel 1

It looks like former Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn isn’t quite done with working on superhero movies.

Warner Bros. confirmed today that they are in talks with Gunn, about him writing their upcoming Suicide Squad 2 film. While he hasn’t officially landed the job yet, the move makes a lot of sense given Gunn’s track record with the Guardians of the Galaxy series. It is also rumoured that he could direct the upcoming film, although that report is less concrete.

According to the report, Gunn’s vision for the film involves a totally new approach than 2016’s Suicide Squad film, and Suicide Squad 2 may not even be a real sequel. David Ayer directed the 2016 film, which was met with a lukewarm response from critics but ended up doing quite well financially, grossing over $745 million on its $325 million budget. There has been no real information Suicide Squad 2, except for the announcement that the film is being produced by Peter Safran.

Earlier this year Gunn was set to work on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film when he was fired for a series of tweets that he sent out a few years prior. The tweets in question were rather offensive and dealt with the topics of paedophilia and rape. At the time of his firing, Gunn said that they were poorly thought out jokes, made when he was younger and angrier.

“The completely honest truth: I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don’t anymore. I don’t blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all,” he said.

If Gunn does get hired it would represent a major win for DC Comics’ film division, as he has shown a knack for creating successful superhero films that are both critically and commercially acclaimed. Suicide Squad 2 currently has no release date but DC has a few movies on the horizon, the next one being December’s Aquaman.
